Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a significant awards ceremony nears, there’s always a clamor for the addition additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category that year
  • Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, however the design of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
